Cloud migration is frequently sold as a foregone conclusion. It is not. Some workloads are dramatically better in the cloud and some are meaningfully worse, and the difference is worth real money over a five-year horizon.

What we do first is unglamorous: inventory what you run, understand how each workload actually behaves, and produce a comparison over a realistic period rather than the first twelve months. First-year comparisons make almost every migration look compelling, because they capture the avoided hardware purchase and none of the recurring cost that follows.

What usually belongs in the cloud

Email, almost without exception now. File storage for typical office documents, particularly for businesses with staff in multiple locations. Line-of-business applications where the vendor offers a hosted version they maintain. Backup copies. Development and test environments. Anything with usage that varies significantly, since paying for peak capacity year-round is the single clearest waste in on-premise infrastructure.

What frequently should not

Applications with heavy local file access, where every operation crossing your internet connection makes the software noticeably slower. Systems with specific latency requirements. Very large datasets where egress charges accumulate quietly and substantially. Certain regulated workloads. And any application whose vendor does not properly support a cloud deployment, where you will own every problem that results without their help.

Hybrid is normal

Most of our clients end up hybrid, and that is a reasonable destination rather than a failure to commit. Email and file storage in Microsoft 365, one line-of-business application on a local server because it genuinely performs better there, backups in the cloud, identity managed across both. The goal is a coherent design, not ideological purity about where things run.

What migration actually involves

The technical move is usually the smallest part. The work is in planning: what depends on what, what breaks when a system moves, which integrations need reconfiguring, what your staff need to be told, and how you get back if something goes wrong. We write the rollback plan before anything moves, and we schedule cutover for when it will disturb the fewest people.

Common questions

Will moving to the cloud save us money?

Sometimes substantially, sometimes not at all. It reliably converts unpredictable capital expenditure into predictable operating expenditure, which has planning value independent of the total. We show you the actual comparison for your workloads rather than a general claim.

Is the cloud more secure than our server?

The infrastructure is almost certainly better secured than a server in your closet. Your configuration of it may not be. Most cloud breaches are misconfiguration and credential compromise rather than provider failure, which is why identity hardening matters more than the hosting decision.

What if our internet goes down?

Then cloud services are unreachable, which is a genuine consideration. For businesses that cannot tolerate that, we design a secondary connection or keep critical workloads local. It is a factor in the assessment rather than a reason to avoid cloud entirely.
