Twenty-two years, one family, one phone number

Ocean Computers, Inc. was founded in San Diego in January 2004 and has been owned and operated by the same family ever since. We support small and mid-size businesses across the United States entirely remotely, using our own US-based technicians.

Our Story

A small company that stayed small on purpose

Growth was never the point. Being the same people answering the same phone number for two decades was.

Ocean Computers opened in San Diego in January 2004, at a moment when most small businesses were still running a server in a closet and hoping nobody unplugged it. Our first clients were local: a dental practice, an accounting firm, a small distributor. We fixed what broke, then gradually took over keeping it from breaking.

What changed over the following two decades was not the work so much as the geography. As broadband improved and business software moved to the cloud, the question of where a technician physically stood became less relevant every year. By the mid twenty-tens, the overwhelming majority of our tickets were being resolved remotely regardless of whether the client was four miles away or four states away. At that point we made the decision that defines the company today: we stopped offering onsite service entirely and rebuilt around remote delivery.

Why we gave up the truck

Dropping onsite work sounds like a reduction. In practice it was a specialization. It meant we could hire technicians based on diagnostic skill rather than commute radius. It meant our documentation standards had to become genuinely good, because a remote technician cannot walk over and look at a blinking light. It meant our tooling had to be excellent rather than adequate. And it meant we could serve a company with eleven people spread across six states exactly as well as one with eleven people in a single office.

It also meant we had to be honest about the small percentage of work that genuinely requires hands on hardware. When a server power supply dies or a switch needs to be physically replaced, we coordinate a local vendor, brief them, and manage the work on your behalf. You are not left to find someone on your own, and you are not billed for our travel because there is none.

What has not changed

The family ownership has not changed. The refusal to outsource has not changed, and it never will, because it is the one commitment that makes everything else we claim believable. Every technician who touches your systems is employed by Ocean Computers and works in the United States.

The pace has not changed either. We take on a limited number of new clients each year because a crew that is stretched thin stops being a crew and becomes a queue. If we are at capacity we will tell you so rather than sign you and degrade service for everyone already here.

The same family has answered this phone number since 2004. That is not nostalgia. It is the product.Ocean Computers, San Diego CA

Where we work

Our office is in San Diego, California, and our technicians work from the United States. Our clients are located in all fifty states, which is a direct result of the remote model rather than an ambition we announced. Distributed workforces are our default assumption. A company with employees in Portland, Austin, Tampa and a home office in Ohio is an ordinary Tuesday for us, not a special engagement.

Operating Principles

What we will and will not do

Every one of these costs us money in the short term. We keep them because they are why clients stay.

We never outsource a ticket

No offshore call centers, no overflow vendors, no subcontracted labor. If you speak to someone about your systems, that person is on our payroll.

We quote before we work

Projects are priced before they start. You will never receive an invoice describing hours you did not know were being spent.

We tell you when the answer is no

If a project will not pay for itself, or your environment genuinely does not need what you asked us to sell you, we say so in writing.

We do not hold your systems hostage

You own your licenses, your hardware and your documentation. If you leave, all of it goes with you, cleanly and without a fight.

We cap our own growth

We take a limited number of new clients per year. Overloading a crew is the fastest way to become the kind of provider our clients left.

We do not claim to certify compliance

We implement and document the technical safeguards behind HIPAA, PCI and similar frameworks. Certification is an auditor’s job, not an IT provider’s.
