Fine-tune Windows privacy settings

Windows shares more by default than most people expect. None of it is secret, it is all in one settings area, and a sensible setup takes about five minutes. Here is what each toggle actually does.

● Free No signup, no catch● Plain English, numbered steps● Windows 11 and 10 covered● Stuck? Call (858) 429-1311

1. General privacy toggles

Go to Settings, Privacy & security, General. Turn off Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID and the suggested-content options. These only affect advertising, so nothing breaks.

2. Diagnostics and feedback

On Diagnostics & feedback, set diagnostic data to the required minimum, turn off Tailored experiences, and click Delete diagnostic data if you want a clean slate. Windows still receives everything it needs to stay updated and secure.

3. Activity history and search

On Activity history, turn off sending activity history to Microsoft. Under Search permissions, turn off search history in the cloud if you prefer searches to stay on the device.

4. Location, camera, and microphone

These three pages under App permissions matter most. Location can be off entirely on a desktop. For camera and microphone, leave the master switch on but go down the app list and remove anything that has no business seeing or hearing you. Your meeting apps stay, the solitaire game does not.

5. A quick check of what has been accessing things

Each permission page shows recent activity, which apps used the camera or microphone and when. Ninety seconds reviewing those lists tells you more than any scanning tool, and anything unfamiliar there is worth a phone call to us.

What we recommend for work computers

For business machines we go further: enforced device encryption, controlled app permissions, and settings that stay put instead of drifting back after updates. That is part of Crew Guard, and the policies are documented so an auditor or insurer can see them.

When to stop and call us

These steps are safe on any computer. If you get partway through and something looks different from what is described, or the problem keeps coming back, that is usually a sign of a deeper issue worth a professional look. Call (858) 429-1311 and a US-based technician can take it from there, including a privacy and security baseline applied to every computer you own. The first conversation is free.
