Turn off the features you do not need
Windows runs a surprising amount you never asked for. None of it is harmful, but together it costs memory, battery, and attention. Here is what is safe to switch off and how.
1. Startup programs first
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Startup apps, and disable everything you do not need the second you sign in. This is the highest-value stop on the list. Programs still work normally when you launch them yourself.
2. Background apps
Go to Settings, Apps, Installed apps, click the three dots next to an app you rarely use, choose Advanced options if it offers them, and set Background apps permissions to Never. Chat and mail apps you rely on should keep running, and everything else can wait to be opened.
3. Visual effects
Press the Start button, type adjust the appearance, and open Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows. Choose Adjust for best performance, then re-check Smooth edges of screen fonts so text stays pleasant. On older or modest hardware this change is genuinely noticeable.
4. Widgets, tips, and suggestions
Right-click an empty spot on the taskbar, open Taskbar settings, and turn off Widgets if you never use them. Then go to Settings, System, Notifications, scroll to the bottom, and untick the options offering suggestions and tips. Windows becomes quieter immediately.
5. Remove preinstalled apps you will never open
In Settings, Apps, Installed apps, uninstall the trials and extras that shipped with the computer. Games, second antivirus trials, and manufacturer bloat are safe to remove. If you do not recognize something, search its name first or ask us rather than guessing.
One caution
Leave OneDrive, Windows Security, and anything your office installed for work alone. Turning off the wrong sync or security tool creates a much bigger problem than the speed it saves.
